Covenant College Sunday
Greetings from the Church Relations Office!
This year Covenant College Sunday is on October 14, and we would love for your church to participate. On this day, we ask churches to consider recognizing and praying for the work of Covenant College during their Sunday activities.
There are many ways your church can participate, from praying for Covenant to having someone share a testimony about Covenant to showing a video about the College. More information here.
Please contact us at 706.419.1609 if you have any questions and we would be happy to assist. We are grateful for the ongoing support of so many congregations and families.
Blessings,

Coordinator for Advancement Services
Presidential Inauguration
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Derek Halvorson will be inaugurated as the sixth president of Covenant College this Friday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Due to limited seating, attendance at the inauguration is by invitation. We look forward to students being in attendance.
We warmly invite all parents and friends of the College to watch a live stream of the inauguration ceremony, which will be available at covenant.edu/inauguration.
Academic Support
I love that there is something about the fall and the beginning of a new year that brings the opportunity for a fresh start! I still enjoy making the pilgrimage to the office supply store to get a pack of new pens and some new notebooks. The first few weeks of classes are a chance for so many students to start new, healthy study habits, create an organized schedule and plan ahead for their assignments. But I think that like most of us, it is easy for students to deviate from those plans as other fun activities battle for time that was originally set aside for studies.
Covenant has so many opportunities for involvement on campus, from leadership roles to clubs to athletics--there will always be something to do instead of study if a student can not find the right balance and create some boundaries. Because our campus has so much to offer in extra-curricular activities and great relationships, it is easy for students to forget that academics are a major part of the college experience. One of my favorite things to do with students is to sit down with an empty calendar and talk about how they are spending their time and when and where to find time to study effectively. I also spend a lot of my meetings with individual students asking about their notes and their reading and study habits. I then try to brainstorm with them to find strategies that may work better for them based on their preferences and
personalities.
Midterm exams have begun, papers are due and we have three weeks until professors post midterm grades. There is time now to make the necessary changes for many students who may be making poor choices with their academics. Talk to your sons and daughters about how they are spending their time, where and when they study, and about the things they are learning in their classes. Remind them that academics are a very important piece of what drew them to Covenant College, and they need to take advantage of the wealth of knowledge coming from our faculty. Also, don’t forget to remind yourself that the time outside of class is another important piece of what drew them to Covenant. Although I do not want your son or daughter to end up living in the library at the end of each semester in order to catch up, I do not want them to miss out on the amazing
relationships that they can develop with their hallmates, classmates and our faculty and staff. Learning balance is key.
Remind students that there are resources on campus for help with time management, note-taking assistance, help with prioritizing their work and even assistance with writing their papers! You and your students can learn more online about our academic support resources.

U.S. News Names Covenant #6 in the South
In its 2013 edition of Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report named Covenant College 6th among regional colleges in the South. This is Covenant's 10th consecutive year in the top ten in its category.
"While our aim is not to garner accolades," said President Derek Halvorson, "we are pleased when others recognize the value of a Covenant education and the impact it has on the lives of our students and alumni, as I personally can attest. That impact is, of course, much deeper than any rankings can measure, as our purpose rests in the equipping of biblically grounded men and women to serve the church and the world as they live out God's callings on their lives."
Attention West Michigan Parents
We are excited that Covenant College President Derek Halvorson will be in our region on October 21. You are invited to a noon luncheon with Dr. Halvorson at the home of Ken and Joan Buiter at 3065 - 92nd St SW, Byron Center, MI 49315.
Parents and alumni are welcome to fellowship over a delicious meal and hear an update from our president. Please RSVP by October 15 to Jane Jelgerhuis by email or phone at 616.990.7210.
